How to put yourself and your clients at the center of your marketing (or what the heck is humane marketing?)

Marketing is an essential part of any business, but have you ever thought about the approach you are taking toward your target audience? Have you ever considered the fact that the people you are trying to sell your product to are, first and foremost, human beings? This is where the concept of Humane Marketing comes in.

Humane Marketing places the focus on the human element of business. Here I’ll explore what Humane Marketing is all about, and why it’s an approach that I think is worth applying to your business.

At the core of Humane Marketing is the recognition that we are human beings. This means that we experience a wide range of emotions, from joy to sadness, and everything in between. We are also relational beings, and we need some form of interaction and connection with other human beings. Even if we prefer to be on our own, we still need some form of interaction to have a fully developed brain and emotional capacity.

Humane Marketing also acknowledges that we are creatures of cycles. Whether it's the cycle of birth and death or the cycles of rest that we require, it is important to recognize and respect these cycles. This includes cycles within our natural bodies, such as menstrual cycles, and the cycles of change that we experience throughout our lives.

Accessibility is another important aspect of Humane Marketing. Marketing that assumes that everyone is neurotypical isn’t really accessible. Humane Marketing considers the many ways that humans receive and consume information, and ensures that marketing is accessible to as many folks as possible, regardless of their ability or neurodivergence.

And perhaps most importantly, Humane Marketing acknowledges that we are not perfect. We are fallible and cannot produce all the time. This means that marketing that focuses on the idea of perfection and an unattainable lifestyle is not only unrealistic, but it is also unkind.

What I love most about Humane Marketing is that it is an approach to marketing that places the focus on the human element of business - YOU. By recognizing that we are human beings, relational beings, creatures of cycles, and ones with varying needs, businesses can create marketing that is more empathetic, relatable, and accessible. So before you plan your marketing, put yourself into your marketing plan first.
